Lifestyle

Over the past decade, green building certifications have become more prominent in the construction industry, as reducing our environmental footprint and being more environmentally conscious has moved to the forefront of our day-to-day lives. One building certification that sets the bar for green building in Canada is Built Green®, Canada’s industry-driven home certification program. With consumer demand for sustainably built homes on the rise, Built Green enables consumers to confidently find the right builder for them.

About Built Green®

Offering multiple certification programs to enable everything from small-scale renovations to large, multi-family projects, the Built Green® certification program is a completely voluntary program for builders that want to build durable, healthier, more affordable homes that take a holistic approach to sustainability. The program addresses seven key areas of sustainable building practices:

  • Energy & envelope
  • Materials & methods
  • Indoor air quality
  • Ventilation
  • Waste management
  • Water conservation
  • Building practices

To be a part of the Built Green program, training is essential. Prior to building any certified projects, all builder members must be trained in Built Green practices, policies, and procedures for all of these important areas of home building.

While the Built Green certification helps builders meet consumer demand for healthier, more sustainable homes, it also equips builders with a long list of benefits that they can pass down to their home buyers - which may be the most important part of the certification.

Homeowner Benefits

Save money with economic benefits

A new home is a huge expense and with it, buyers often look for ways to save beyond their possession date. As the owner of a certified Built Green home, you’ll own a much more affordable home in the long-term as you will enjoy reduced monthly operating costs; saving on water consumption, electricity use, and lower gas bills. You will even save on future renovation costs by living in a more durable, lasting home!

Healthier, more comfortable home

Buying a Built Green certified home means you’re buying a home that has modern technology that allows you and your family to live in a home that is healthier and more comfortable. Partners’ certified Built Green homes all feature Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs) to remove allergens and improve the air quality of your home. This leaves your home free of virtually all air pollutants and dust. Certified homes also have a significant reduction in drafts, cold spots, and temperature variance from room-to-room due to the program’s emphasis on air tightness and proper ventilation.

Increased durability

Durability and longevity are some of the most overlooked aspects of a sustainably built home. Built Green certified homes can feature a wide variety of durable features. In the case of Partners’ Built Green homes, we are pleased to offer extremely durable fibre-cement siding that can stand up to the elements - even here in Alberta’s unpredictable climate.

Improved home efficiency

One of the largest and most notable advantages of a Built Green certified home is that they are all resource efficient; reducing the home’s environmental impact from the beginning of the build all the way through possession, and every day moving forward.

Outside and inside, our homes are designed to be both low-maintenance, and energy efficient. Low-maintenance, environmentally friendly xeriscaping landscaping is integrated outside the home. You will find double glazed, low-E windows that deliver an abundance of light while further adding to your home’s energy efficient nature. Inside, Partners’ Built Green certified homes feature IBC tankless water heaters that reduce energy costs and maintenance while providing more hot water to your home, as well as IBC air handlers to provide reliability and superior comfort.

Resale Value

Buying a Built Green certified home means buying quality, durability and efficiency. As such, a Built Green certified home also holds a higher resale value. Homes with green certification can sell for close to 10% more on average than homes without. This means that if you ever decide to move, you can list your home with confidence.

Mortgage Rebates

When you purchase a Built Green certified home, you’re even eligible for a mortgage rebate! Single family new homes that are certified Built Green are automatically eligible for a partial mortgage loan insurance premium refund of 15% through the Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation. All you need is your certificate!

A Built Green certification authenticates a high performance home that provides builders with credibility and home buyers peace of mind with a sustainable, durable, cost-effective new home. That's why we're proud to be Built Green!
